Happy Holidays from UEDA!

This newsletter closes out what has been a productive and rewarding year for us at UEDA. We completed strategic visioning with our Board, developing a plan for growth and that will allow us to enhance the delivery of our core services to members. Last week we sent out a ‘Letter from the Director’ which provides more detail on this work and our plans for 2018.

UEDA also celebrated its 20th anniversary, a time of both reflection on the past and excitement for the future. We’d like to thank Bader Philanthropies for their sustained investment in UEDA over its 20 year history. At our Annual Community Gathering we also recognized long-time funders, the City of Milwaukee, Forest County Potawatomi Foundation, Freddie Mac, Greater Milwaukee Foundation, HUD, JPMorgan Chase, BMO Harris Bank (and M&I Bank), and US Bank for their significant support for UEDA.

We look forward to serving and working alongside you all in 2018.

(And... don’t forget to save the date for our annual fundraiser, Carnival Milwaukee,
which will be held on Saturday, February 24!)

Racially-Loaded Planning & Development Terms
Shelterforce has gathered some racially loaded terms that are commonly used in the community development field and explains how they can further implicit racial bias.

Racial Inequality Is Bad for Business
Recent research by FSG and PolicyLink shows that companies using core business products and practices to address racial inequity are creating a competitive edge for themselves.

Nonprofit & Small Business

Implications of Tax Reform for Nonprofits
An update from the National Council of Nonprofits provides a brief overview of how tax reform could affect charitable giving. For example, the bill does not include a provision to counter the expected drop in giving to charitable works in communities due to the doubling of the standard deduction and the reduction of itemizers to less than ten percent of taxpayers. See their comparison chart here.

Wisconsin Ranks High for Small Business Activity
With 6.5% of adults in the state indicating that they own a business as their primary job, Wisconsin is now ranked second among the 25 largest states for small business activity.
