UEDA Member Milestones


Johnson Bank has opened a new community lending office on Miller Park Way! Look for details on their grand-opening celebration soon.

The YWCA Southeast Wisconsin has received a two-year, $100,000 grant from the Greater Milwaukee Foundation to address Milwaukee’s racial disparities and expand their racial justice programming.

Congrats to these UEDA Members on their graduation from the LISC Milwaukee ACRE programAriam Kesete (Alum), Rick Banks (HGNI/Riverworks EDC) and LaQuondra Shaw (Northwestern Mutual)!

Metropolitan Milwaukee Fair Housing Council's director, William R. Tisdale, spoke at the Milwaukee Rally for Unity and Pride, offering 4 ways we can work together to expand LGBT housing rights. Thank you!

A new Milwaukee Magazine piece on one of Riverworks Development Corporation's service areas, Harambee, highlights the history and promising future of this north-side neighborhood.

Congratulations to the Wisconsin Veterans Chamber of Commerce on the launch of their new Madison chapter and to the Hmong Wisconsin Chamber of Commerce on the opening of their Wausau satellite office!

Projected impacts of Bus Rapid Transit
It's estimated that new BRT buses would increase ridership along the proposed route by 31 percent, ease congestion by removing thousands of cars from the road, and spur millions in economic development, but some worry that not all residents will feel the positive impacts. Read more >>

Retired WeEnergies executive Thelma Sias and Former U.S. Sen. Herb Kohl were honored by the Greater Milwaukee Foundation for their work in helping the Milwaukee community. Congratulations! Read more >>

City receives grant to increase diversity of vendors
With a $100,000 grant, along with coaching, technical assistance and implementation resources, the City of Milwaukee will pursue at least one new strategy to increase the diversity of municipal vendors and contractors and direct more spend to local minority-owned businesses. Read more >>


Common Council approves number of new projects
The Common Council recently approved millions of dollars in new real estate projects and programs that will take place in five Milwaukee neighborhoods, resulting in 346 new apartments, the sale of a vacant MPS school, and the launch of a program that allocates $100,000 so artists can leverage no-interest loans to turn city-owned homes into community hubs. HUD's 2017-2018 Building HOME Webinar Series
The Department of Housing and Urban Development's (HUD) Office of Affordable Housing Preservation is offering the Building HOME training series online! The virtual series provides an overview of the HOME Investment Partnerships Program (HOME), including the latest requirements codified in the July 24, 2013 HOME Final Rule. Details & Registration >>

Milwaukee Film to operate Oriental Theater
The organization will be fundraising $10 million to revitalize the 1927 building that will eventually be run as a nonprofit move theater. Read more >>

Two grant opportunities for the disability community
The Wisconsin Board for People with Developmental Disabilities announced two new exciting grant opportunities: (1) Partners in Policymaking, a leadership program where you will learn about how you can impact programs and policies to improve the lives of people with disabilities, and (2) SPARKS, mini-grants of $500 to $3,000 are designed to help community groups of people with disabilities and family members make a change in their community. 


Thinking about Diversity in Nonprofit Leadership
As nonprofits use a more overt style of advocacy in the policy arena, they must also prepare for a similar style of conflict inside of the workplace. Read more >>

FaB Wisconsin SCALER Seminar for Food Businesses
Early-stage food businesses (2-5 years) are encouraged to attend FaB's new four-hour program on July 19 to learn about capacity-building business and financial models, and identify outlets that can support a scaling food or beverage manufacturing business. Learn more >>

Mass Imprisonment in America by Sam Mihara

Sam will discuss his own experiences as a prisoner at the Heart Mountain Relocation Center and how
internment camps relate to today’s proposed Muslim registry and the expulsion of immigrants to holding camps at the US/Mexico border. Free and open to the public.
