UEDA is here for its Members and Partners

This is an important time for policy-making, both in our State and at the Federal level.
As a membership association, we can play a role in supporting the important and impactful work our members do every day in urban communities to provide safe and affordable housing, lend to small businesses, strengthen low & moderate income families and leverage private investment in underserved areas to revitalize neighborhoods.

This spring Wisconsin’s State Legislature will be working to pass the biennium budget.
President Trump has released a FY2017 Appropriation Request and FY2018 Budget Blueprint, which call for deep cuts in domestic spending, particularly in programs that nearly all of our members and partners utilize and work with so effectively.

Look for a message from us in the next month about how UEDA can support your work by engaging with policymakers in various ways. In the meantime, you can count on us to continue to inform you on the issues and opportunities for you to engage in this important process.

If your company or organization belongs to a trade association or issue coalition, now would be a good time to check in with them. If you're looking or groups to connect with, feel free to contact us.

Scroll down for information regarding next week’s State budget hearing and articles
related to potential cuts in CDFI funding.

And please contact us at anytime to share your concerns and suggestions!

Next Week: Wisconsin State budget hearing with Joint Committee on Finance
Milwaukee’s will be held on Wednesday at April 5 at 10am at State Fair. Click here for hearing details, including tips on providing testimony. A recent article in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel provides an overview of key issues in the proposed budget. For budget documents and analysis the Wisconsin Legislative Fiscal Bureau and Wisconsin Budget Project are two good sources.

Historic Milwaukee Soldiers Home Rehab
The project will add 101 housing units for veterans and their families who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless and provide supportive services through the Center for Veterans Issues. Renovation will start later this year; learn more about Milwaukee Soldiers Home here and view photos here.

CDFI Fund Threatened in Proposed Budget
CDFIs are an integral funding source in both urban and rural communities across the nation -- proposed budget cuts to the CDFI Fund will no doubt stifle access to responsible, affordable credit options for the millions of American who can't access traditional forms of credit.

Investments in Transit are Critical for Region
To successfully compete for new residents and new businesses, the region needs to make proactive changes that make it more attractive. SEWRPC executive director encourages the public and legislators to examine the findings of VISION 2050 -- their new long-range plan for land use and transportation in southeastern Wisconsin.

Nonprofit & Small Business

Nonprofit Nonpartisanship
The longstanding legal protection that allows nonprofits to speak out on issues of the day and advocate on legislation, but prohibits supporting or opposing candidates for office, is under threat from current administration's House Ways & Means Committee. Find out how you can take action to uphold The Johnson Amendment >>

Entrepreneurship & Student Loans
A recent Kaufmann Foundation study found that the rise in student debt in recent years coincides with a decline in start-ups among those between the ages of 20 and 34 years old since 1996.

Pushing Minorities To Become Entrepreneurs
Manufacturing Diversity Institute (MDI) is a Milwaukee nonprofit organization with programs that focus on fostering the development of diverse manufacturing businesses, target veterans, and connect thought leaders with aspiring entrepreneurs.

State Budget Calls for Small Business Support
Mark Hogan, CEO of the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation, highlights encouraging aspects of Gov. Walker's 2017-19 proposed budget, including a call for a $34.5 million increase in spending for broadband programs (mainly in northern WI) and a recommendation to remove barriers for startups by identifying which occupational licenses are necessary to protect public health and safety, and which are barriers that could block would-be entrepreneurs.
