What we're working on...

UEDA and Walnut Way are continuing to work together on developing opportunities to explore cooperative ownership in Milwaukee. On September 23 we hosted the UW Center for Cooperatives for a session that focused on worker cooperatives, the solidarity economy, co-op governance and start-up steps. On October 22 (6PM-7:30PM) we will continue our virtual Cooperative Learning Series by welcoming the  Philadelphia Area Cooperative Alliance for a presentation on how participation in cooperative enterprise deepens opportunities for practicing democracy and enhances overall community civic engagement. PACA will also discuss successful knowledge building opportunities for co-op entrepreneurs to participate in with others who might be interested in turning an idea into a cooperative enterprise. On Saturday, September 26 our Take Root Milwaukee program partnered with Near West Side Partners to host a virtual Homeownership Fair where over 50 people joined in to learn about resources available from the City of Milwaukee, the benefits of working with a HUD-approved housing counseling agency, and how to talk with lenders and Realtors as you start on your path to homeownership. A recording of the session will be available to view and share on the Take Root Milwaukee YouTube channel soon.

Our Bank On Greater Milwaukee program celebrated their one-year anniversary this month! At their last coalition meeting several coalition members were recognized with BOGM Champion Award for their dedication to the efforts of our work. Menomonee Valley Partners is hosting a Doors Open Self-Guided Public Art Bike Tour for people to experience the Valley’s public art through October 10.

In an effort to improve consumer protection services in Southeastern Wisconsin, the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) has reallocated staff to be based in Milwaukee. Learn more about their services here.

The Medical College of Wisconsin, the Greater Milwaukee Foundation, and Royal Capital Group have chosen the name of ThriveOn Collaboration for their joint vision that is focusing on places in Milwaukee where investment has been scarce and people of color are disproportionately affected by health and social disparities.

Congratulations to Emerald Mills of Diverse Dining on being named a Hometown Hero!

Over 130 individuals (in-person+virtual) participated in session one of the BizStarts Institute Community Bootcamp for Entrepreneurs series which will connecting them to tools, concepts, and local entrepreneurs that that will help them successfully launch their own micro-enterprise.

Congratulations to Ian Bautista (Greater Milwaukee Foundation) abd Nelson Soler (Latino Chamber of Commerce of SE Wisconsin) on being named among the 39 Most Influential Latinos in Wisconsin by the Madison365 publication!

United Way of Greater Milwaukee & Waukesha County's financial stability portfolio manager, Krystina Kohler, talks about how she approaches her work with the Safe & Stable Homes (SASH) initiative and what she has learned about equity and justice.

WHEDA CEO, Joaquín Altoro, has been appointed to serve on the Consumer Advisory Board of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, where he will work to elevate the financial concerns of underserved communities at the national level.

  • Associated Bank is seeking a Director of Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion to serve as a thought leader, trusted advisor.
  • WWBIC is looking for a Program Assistant to complete client data entry and support activities related to the promotion and marketing of classes.
  • Milwaukee Christian Center seeks a Growing Connections Program Coordinator to leads middle and high school age youth in hands-on learning centered on gardening, leadership, and community development. They also have a position for an After-School Youth Worker to work hands-on with youth and families, building relationships, leading activities, tutoring, and being a responsible mentor.

Milwaukee County Mortgage Assistance Program
The Milwaukee County Mortgage Assistance Program provides emergency assistance in the form of a grant on behalf of Milwaukee County homeowners who are delinquent in their mortgage payments due to job loss or reduced work hours and wages as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Depending on eligibility and date of income interruption, direct one-time assistance on behalf of the homeowner(s) may be provided for up to six (6) months.  Missed mortgage payments starting March 1, 2020 will be reviewed to the date of application. Additional payments will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Housing Resources, Inc. is accepting applications for Milwaukee County Mortgage Assistance through December 18, 2020. WHEDA RFP: African American & Latino Homeownership Experience 
The Wisconsin Housing and Economic Development Authority is seeking proposals to conduct research with a goal to build a data-driven understanding of African American and Latino households and their experience with homeownership in Wisconsin. RFP is due on October 29, 2020 by 2:00pm CST. Details >>

UW-Extension Financial Educator Training
This free, three-part training series (Oct. 15, 22, 29) will provide participants with a comprehensive training on teaching income and expenses tracking, money values and influences, savings, spending and savings plans, credit reports and scores, trauma-informed care as it relates to financial education, cultural humility, health effects of financial behaviors and best practices in financial education for youth. Upon completion of the training, volunteers will provide lessons to clientele served by a variety of organizations, including Fund My Future Milwaukee and the Bank On coalition. Before- & After-School Care Programs
Milwaukee Recreation's Before- and After-School Programs are open! They provide a safe haven for youth in grades K5-12 during non-school hours. Programs provide varying types of academic and recreational support, including: Homework assistance and tutoring; Enrichment activities (art and music); Technology education; Sports and fitness activities; and Leadership and social skills development. ‘MCTS NEXT’ Route Redesign Approved
On September 24, the Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors approved MCTS NEXT, the agency’s first comprehensive redesign project in decades that focuses on how to specifically improve transit and access to jobs on High Frequency transit (15-minute frequency or better) across our county. Details can be found here. Also approved is a new bus route that will connect residents to jobs at Amazon in Oak Creek.

40 Under 40 Nominations Open
The Milwaukee Business Journal is seeking nominations for its annual 40 Under 40 awards section to be published in the first quarter of 2021. This special section profiles area individuals under age 40 who are making a difference in their industries as well as in their communities. Winners also will be honored at an awards event, which will be held during the first quarter of 2021 in downtown Milwaukee.

Community Health Program Seeks Volunteers
Common Ground has created a program with the Milwaukee Public Health Department to follow up with community members who test positive for COVID-19 and are sent home to heal. Over 20 Common Ground leaders from healthcare professions will be making daily calls to the patients who opt in to the program. The volunteers will ask about the patient’s blood oxygen level and heart rate as well as if they have other needs such as food, housing, childcare, etc. Contact Patricia Obluck to learn more or get involved: or 414.217.6135. City of Milwaukee 2.0 Small Business Grant
The goal of the Milwaukee Restart Program is to help local businesses that have suffered as a result of the pandemic recover economically with safe practices to reopen and adapt to the "new normal". Restart 2.0 will focus on the importance of businesses continuing to operate under the Moving Milwaukee Forward Safely Order and implementing Restaurant and Bar COVID-19 Safety Plans. Home based businesses will be eligible in Restart 2.0. Restart Awards shall be limited to $25,000 overall per eligible businesses. If an applicant received funding in the first Round of Restart, then total combined awards shall not exceed $25,000. Applications will be accepted online between October 1, 2020 and October 8, 2020. Milwaukee County Small Business Recovery Grant
Milwaukee County has created the Small Business Recovery Initiative Grant Program to provide support to businesses located in Milwaukee County by lessening the economic impact of COVID-19. Entrepreneurs of color, women and veterans are encouraged to apply. Grant awards will be a maximum of $20,000 and funds received must be spent by December 31. Application period closes October 1, 2020 at 5:00PM. Details, Eligibility & Application >>

Broadband Expansion Grants
On September 1, the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin (PSC) announced the opening of the 2021 Broadband Expansion Grant round. $24 million in funding is available to projects that will expand high-speed broadband internet to unserved and underserved areas of the state. Applications are due on December 1, 2020. The Wisconsin Broadband Office is hosting a number of webinars for interested persons and potential applicants to attend to learn more about the grant application process: How to Map Your Broadband Grant Project (​Thursday, October 8th, 2-3 p.m. Register) and Broadband Grant and Instructions Overview (Wednesday, October 21st, 2-3 p.m. Register).
